RECORDINGS OF COVER SONGS BE IT STUDIO OR LIVE THAT WERE DONE IN HOMAGE AND WITH THE BEST OF INTENTIONS HOPING NOT TO INCUR LEGAL ACTION IN ANY WAY

CASTLE IN THE CORNER
(formerly DIRTY WORK by Steely Dan)

So the idea with Peter Fagan and I playing these duo gigs was to play our favorite covers, but put a little mustard on ’em. Not be so faithful to the originals. Hence the name ‘SPICY BROWN’.

Peter chose this song to play. We played it first every time we practiced. When you do something fifty times you can get so comfortable with it’s structure that you start being almost disrespectful to it….playing it in an almost crazy manner that’s unrecognizable. This happened with DIRTY WORK. I remember us recording at least 5 different weeks worth of rehearsals in a row, and by week 4, I was trying to bust out of the egg and do stuff differently. Luckily, I had Peter to pull me back down to Earth every once in a while. In the fifth week, I was in a mood. I hear it now on the recording…it’s DIRTY WORK, but it’s kinda….Motown..or Memphis in the 70’s. The TC HELICON vocal enhancer really got my imagination going, and I felt like I had a couple of backup singers in the room with us wearing flowy gowns and big long ass fingernails. I think we played a show with Jonathan Lichtig on drums once and did it this way. I dug it. It had some mustard on it. Spicy Brown.

Peter is on piano, backing vocals and foot drums.
I’m on vocals, and guitar (Taylor T5 through a JBL Eon clean).
