SONG FOR SCOTT CLAYTON
(Formerly LET’S GET IT ON by Marvin Gaye)
In 2005 and 2006, Christopher Eddy and I would go out and just do whatever we wanted and like it.
We would play acoustic duo shows with zero pressure other than we must be having fun ourselves.
This show was in East Windsor, CT at a rather big place called TD Shenanigans.
Cavernous for an acoustic duo.
My old pal Scott Clayton and his girlfriend Christina (who was a smokeshow btw) came by to see us play. My usual schtick when this would happen was to play something rather ridiculous for the situation at hand. Say, if the person requesting the song was a huge biker-gang kind of guy that wanted to hear Skynyrd, well, then I would make a big show of him getting a request. I’d bring him close to the stage and let him say it in my ear. Then I would say “This song is for Otto” and play something like “I TOUCH MYSELF” by the Divynyls or ‘LET’S GET IT ON” by Marvin Gaye. I never got punched. Even once. It was good theatre, and would scare the hell out of the musicians in the band.
A little edge never hurt when you were playing bar gigs.
So Scotty got Marvin Gaye that night, and just to show how much I respected and revered him after the years we worked together, I put a little mustard on it just for him.
Or Christina, most likely 😉
