YOU KNEW I LOVED YOU (DEMO)
Written in 2010 during what we’ll call the ‘Loop Sessions’.
The music definitely came first for this, but not too much ahead….
MAYBE fifteen minutes passed before I had the whole thing.
A. I’d always wanted to write a Dire Straits song.
2. Mark Knopfler, of Dire Straits showed a side of him on his solo albums ( Sailing to Philadelphia; Ragpicker’s Dream) that resonated with me deep deep deep. (See Prarie Wedding for example).
PS: If you read the lyrics to YOU KNEW I LOVED YOU, I hope I don’t have to tell you this is a love song. A never-ending love song. It’s the scene in that guy’s life where he has to say goodbye to his true love…. for now. She’s been lost to an illness and he’s having those imposter syndrome moments of doubt as to whether she ever truly knew how much he loved her.
ALSO- the guitars were built up in this demo via the Loop Pedal using the Taylor T5, a guitar that features 5 different models of guitar in one instrument. I could write a song in this manner and also put down the EMOTION I wanted the song to convey by what guitar tone I used. To the listener NON-musician, this may not be evident, but to me, when I hear the thin Telecaster type lines here, the strummed Martin Acoustic parts, and the Hollowbody Gretch electric accompanying parts, (again, able to be switched ON THE FLY with the Taylor T5), it made it very easy to get in a writing space and make a map of what you hope to someday get a band to record.
Inspired and dedicated with respect and love to my friends Mark and Geizha who taught me so much about what it means to be human and to enjoy every sandwich.
LYRICS
She said, “We’ve never seen the sun rise.”
I said, “We’ve never been to London.”
She said, “You could kiss me in the rain.”
“In London, it rains all the time.”
So that’s what this is all about.
It’s all the time we’re going to get.
We’ll grow some wings
And fly out of here
Holding hands
We haven’t landed yet
They’re going to have to pry you from my cold dead arms
Take the night to climb the hill so high
Above the sea where only Gods know why
See the sun
the red sky sun
and when you’re gone
I’ll let the water just run
Down my cheeks until they just won’t come
And then the sky
the sky turns blue
And then I’ll know
You Knew I Loved You
