GREAT GETAWAY
So, Peter Fagan…remember him? I not only would go over to his house and annoy him on random Sunday nights by making him play my original songs, but would also book shows for he and myself as a Duo in Springfield at the Basketball Hall of Fame’s bar. It was an absolute nightmare other than Sarah, Angie, the bartender with all of the tattoos, and that one cocktail waitress we loved. The clientele hated us and wanted us to die. And preferably do it silently.
I figured what the hell, I’ll spice things up. One Tuesday night after work, I wrote a song about a couple of low class embezzlers who thought they’d gotten away with the perfect heist. I didn’t have time to record it, but I had the whole thing done before I went to bed around 4:30 am. I emailed Peter and Shannon King (who would be playing Cajon that night and sharing in the joyfest that awaited).
Disclaimer: this is a shitty thing to do, so don’t ever do it unless the people you are playing with already have such a deep rooted disdain for you that it won’t matter when the moment happens and they sneer in disgust in your direction. Peter had already been through hell with me a couple of times.
(One being a wedding that was absolutely beautiful, but Peter and my schedules did not mesh well and we were forced to wake up at 6 am to rehearse a song ten times in his apartment. Then get in separate cars and drive 30 miles, set up out of sight in the sub 40 degree temperatures and be ready to sing the bride down the “aisle” which was a path from the woods past a pond and up to the groom waiting at a gazebo. It was truly beautiful. The bride was gorgeous, the groom was in dreamland he was so happy, and just as she put her first foot on the step of the gazebo, our song hit the final beat. It was literally a perfect take under crazy circumstances. I’ll never forget it. All that work for about one minute and fifteen seconds of music, but it worked. And Peter never complained once.)
I wrote down the chord changes to GREAT GETAWAY best I could, trying to be exact and complete about it. When we got to the bar I just decided now or never and set up my phone to record. CONSIDERING the circumstances, I’m pretty proud of this song. It has never been played again.
