STINKY

The obsession with this phrase came from Prince Rogers Nelson. Known to the world solely as Prince. His Purpleness. He was quoted saying “you know something’s funky when it makes your face all squinched up like something’s stinky”. It was instantly recognized as the ‘funk face’, and it was from then on the only face every musician alive wanted to see when they played.
The drawing to the left here was done in 1995 or 1996 to give it a mascot, kind of….an anthropomorphic Skunk named Stinky that wore a unitard reminiscent to the one James Brown wore in the mid-70’s. (What?)

I helped Flipper Dave out for a bit for about a year or so, and in return they would play some of my songs live. This was always a fun one as Dave Gallo had the Flipper Shuffle at the ready whenever we needed to get in a groove. I wrote this song with the Sons of Cement Bones in ’92 and always wanted to feature it in a danceable setting. This is a nice version of it because it’s only 4 minutes long. Brett and Lane are pretty tight with the structure and they let me float on top with the lyrics freely playing to the crowd. It’s a good time in there when we were clicking.
