JEPH

JEPH was the name of my dog. My parents gave him to me for my Birthday in 1996. I lived with Jeph for about a week before I had to get in the car and go to North Carolina with the band. I asked my then boss at GOULET PRINTERY, Cy, if he wanted a dog. He and Lisa were just about to have their first child, (Alec), and they could grow up together. They took Jeph in, and he lived a very happy life. I was super relieved. I had no time for a dependent living the life I lived.

I had written this song in the room on High St in Winsted on the acoustic. It was at first a finger warm-up for me when I would practice. I would get in a groove and hear something in there and write it out, hoping to someday get a band to play it. The words are very non-pc for today, but the musicians here absolutely killed their parts. John Macbeth is on rhythm guitar and is completely buried in the mix. Please note that John was and is a much better guitarist than I would ever become, and he is only buried because of an extenuating circumstance I don’t want to go into here. (But, I will later…) . Mark Ahles is on the drums, and Chucky Palmer is on bass. This was THE ROASTERS band. I was again in over my head with these guys, but my saving grace was the piano player. Greg and I met each other at the boat house in Winsted. I wanted to be his friend instantly. What a great mind. His piano on this track is so joy-filled and technically perfect for the moment I still swoon when I listen. All I had to do was tell Greg a piano player we loved to emulate, and it would give him a template to work off of.

The song has nothing to do with Jeph, the Dog. I just needed a name.
