DRINKING WITH A STRANGER

IN 2017, I was asked to do a private project for a birthday present. I needed to hire a band as I was way out of the game by then. Bass player Frank Brockelhurst had returned from England by then, and David Keith of MIGHTY PURPLE/MISSION ZERO/RAINBOW/NELSON fame just happened to be available for an afternoon of studio time. We did our session, and then I remembered I had this song on my phone that needed a home. I thought maybe David could find an artist that might want to take a stab at it. I thought it had SMASHMOUTH vibes and might be good for a movie soundtrack. Instead, I took a chance and asked Paul at THE ROCK BARN for a half-hour of studio time, and begged David and Frank to come back up there for a two-take session. Paul thought I was nuts, but things had advanced so quickly technology wise that I could email the guys the demo from my phone and they could see what I was going for….and I told them to do whatever they thought would happen if we were in an L.A. studio. Give it your best for two takes and we’re done. Well, that worked. This took less than a half-hour to record, and I recorded a guitar solo overdub and some backing vocals (which I wanted Megan Chenot to do with me but couldn’t maneuver fast enough! I tried to make it sound like she was there, though…) it was over just like that!
The song was a pointed dissection of the new online dating trends. Overheard conversations at work and out at coffee shops gave me all the ammunition I needed.
